about
Time is relentless, and no matter what, it cannot be halted or held back. On his newest single and first proper release since the full length album, “Tensus,” Water Monster (aka prolific multi-instrumentalist Max Harnishfeger) wrestles with these inevitabilities and gently beats the war drum of perseverance. Harnishfeger describes the song as a “battle hymn for a stagnant soul,” a stirring encouragement to keep discovering and exploring the beauty of the world, even as time and life itself attempt to wear you down. “Battle lines drawn in the sand, while the tide keeps coming in,” he sings over a chiming, synth ear worm, suggesting a war that’s never won, but one we must never tire of fighting.
Water Monster has always occupied a space between down-tempo, soul inflected electronica, and more ambient experimentation. Still Trying sits perfectly in the unique sound Water Monster has carved out, synths cascading and falling like the tide itself over a march-like groove that complements the introspective vocal delivery. The song builds to a lovely bridge where Harnishfeger seems to be reminding himself and the listener that each breath taken is a chance to center yourself and begin again, regardless of what the past may hold. The song itself is a warmly welcomed breath of fresh air from a talented artist constantly in the process of invention and reinvention.
lyrics
Lost in the cottonwood temple
Following the shadow you cast
Leaving well-enough alone isn't easy as it sounds
Chained like a dog to the past
Are you still trying to alter your mindset
Battle lines drawn in the sand
While the tide keeps coming in
Feel the advances spoil your chances
Of being your own kind of man
While the tide keeps coming in
Every thought stopped at the border
Pacing back and forth at the gate
You say you wanna stay awake but the daylight wears you out
Are you still trying to alter your mindset
Battle lines drawn in the sand
While the tide keeps coming in
Feel the advances spoil your chances
Of being your own kind of man
While the tide keeps coming in
Unify and conquer
No one's eyes are on you
Take a deep breath and forget the trail you tried to blaze
(Blaze) the fire inward
Reborn as beginners
Open up your eyes and exhale the silence
Are you still trying to alter your mindset
Battle lines drawn in the sand
While the tide keeps coming in
Feel the advances spoil your chances
Of being your own kind of man
While the tide keeps coming in
